Overview An energetic pair of crouching Imperial Guardian Lions (Shishi or Foo Dogs), sculpted in a dynamic low-slung hunting posture with raised flame-like tails. Finished in a deep oxblood red faux-cinnabar glaze, these freestanding sculptures bring vital protection, movement, and rich color to mantlepieces, library shelves, or credenza displays. Deep Cultural & Historical Background Sculpted in the lively tradition of East Asian temple guardians (Komainu / Shishi), these figures depart from standard seated poses to embody alerted protection, coiled muscle, and spiritual readiness. The dual expression honors the sacred cosmic pairing of A-un: one lion features an open mouth issuing the primordial sound (A), while the second holds its mouth closed (Un), symbolizing the beginning and end of all creation, breath, and universal balance. Formed from solid, high-density composite resin, the pair replicates the carved depth and rich mineral pigmentation of classical red cinnabar lacquer (tiāoqī), with dark recessed aging accents highlighting the intricate spiral curls of their coiled manes. Condition & Surface Character Excellent vintage condition with solid structural integrity throughout. The rich red surface retains a deep satin luster, enhanced by dark antiquing within the carved fur and body contours. The unlined bases show minor shelf friction consistent with dense cast resin pieces, standing entirely stable without tipping. Dimensions & Weight Height: 6.0 inches Width/Length: 5.8 inches Depth: 3.0 inches Weight Profile: Heavy / Solid Density Composite Resin (Pair)
