Overview
A small vintage Chinese tripod censer, or incense burner, in a silvered brass-tone metal. The round body has three raised lion masks with loose ring handles, set between leaf-shaped relief panels. A gadrooned band circles the shoulder, and the tall flared collar is engraved with an interlocking geometric border. The body stands on three legs topped with mask heads. The finish shows warm brass on the high points, silvering in places and darker tones in the recesses. It suits a desk, shelf, altar or meditation corner.
Background
Tripod censers take their shape from ancient Chinese bronze vessels, and they have long been used for burning incense at home altars and in studies. This piece is unmarked. It is hand-worked in relief rather than cast, with hollow legs that are open at the tips.
Condition
Good vintage condition. Two of the three lion masks still have their loose rings; the third ring is missing, leaving an empty ring hole. There is tarnish and wear to the finish throughout, light surface lines and small dents consistent with age, copper showing at the leg tips, and old residue and darkening inside the bowl from past use. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
It measures 3.5 x 3.5 x 3.0 inches (H x W x D). It is small and light.
