Overview A striking pair of vintage East Asian lacquered wooden decorative bowls, expertly finished in deep mirror-black lacquer. The exterior of each vessel is decorated with delicate silver hand-painted botanical branches displaying chrysanthemums and plum blossoms. In contrast, the interior reveals hand-painted gold and polychrome goldfish (kingyo) swimming among fine aquatic flora. Raised on solid circular bases, these small bowls add a refined focal point to vanity trays, console tables, and Mid-Century Modern or Asian art collections. Complimentary, fully insured standard domestic shipping is included with purchase. Deep Cultural & Historical Background These vessels reflect traditional East Asian lacquer artistry, combining exterior silver brushwork (miao yin) with interior gold lacquer painting (miao jin). The interior motif depicts goldfish (Jinyu), an auspicious homophone in Chinese material culture for "Gold and Jade in Abundance" (Jinyu Mantang), representing wealth, tranquility, and domestic harmony. The exterior wall motifs present two of the traditional "Four Gentlemen" of East Asian botanical art: the Chrysanthemum (Juhua), signifying resilience and autumn noble character, and the Plum Blossom (Meihua), symbolizing renewal and endurance. Produced during the mid-20th-century export era, these pieces combine centuries-old resin artistry with timeless decorative utility. Condition & Surface Character Preserved in excellent vintage condition with strong structural integrity. The deep black lacquer coating retains a brilliant, reflective luster across both bowls. The silver exterior floral lines and interior painted goldfish remain crisp with vivid color retention. Faint, age-appropriate micro-scuffs are present on the underside foot rims from gentle historic handling. The base of one bowl retains its original stamped export mark.
