A vintage Chinese cloisonne enamel trinket box (pill or ring box) in its brocade gift box.
The Design
The domed lid shows the Great Wall of China winding past peach-colored mountain peaks and green trees above blue water, with white blossoms in the foreground, all outlined in gilt wire on a black ground. The inside of both halves is enameled bright green. The underside has white roundels with gilt characters among cloud scrolls, around a gilt center.
About The Piece
Cloisonne is made by fixing fine metal wires onto a metal body to form small cells, filling them with colored enamel, then firing and polishing. Boxes like this were popular Chinese export and gift pieces in the late 20th century, often sold in brocade boxes like this one. The gift box is covered in black brocade woven with a pavilion, flowering branches and a boat, with a cream satin insert.
Condition
The enamel box is in excellent vintage condition, with glossy color and no chips or cracks visible. The gilt base shows light wear and tarnish. The brocade box is sturdy, but the cream satin insert has yellowing and some stains from age. Please see all photos.
