Overview
A vintage Chinese carved wood miniature altar table with a long, narrow top that rolls up into scrolled ends. The apron below the top has three pierced oval panels and four corner brackets, all carved with flowering branches and round fruit. The two trestle legs are set in from the ends, and each leg frames a pierced floral panel above a block foot. The finish is a dark reddish brown, and the carved areas have lighter tones in the recesses that make the pattern stand out. It works as a display stand for a small vase, figure or bowl on a shelf, desk, mantel or in a cabinet.
Background
Altar tables with scrolled ends, known in Chinese as qiaotouan, are a classic Chinese furniture form, and small versions like this one were made to raise and display objects. This table is unsigned, with no maker's mark. It is made of wood with a dark finish over the surface, and the top is built from joined boards. The wear, the old repair and the aged finish point to an older piece, though the exact age and wood type have not been established.
Condition
Good pre-owned condition with the carved panels intact. One foot has an old glued repair where the leg panel meets the foot block; the repair line is visible, and the table sits level and is very stable. The top has scattered scratches and a cloudy, worn patch near one end, and there is a fine crack in the board on the underside. The finish shows general rubbing and edge wear. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The table is 3.5 x 14 x 4.8 inches (H x W x D), about 8.9 x 35.6 x 12.2 cm, and weighs 12.6 oz.
