Cultural & Artistic Background
Rooted in East Asian ritual metalworking traditions, wide-mouthed censer vessels adorned with guardian beast masks (taotie or shishi) draw inspiration from classical ceremonial bronze forms (gui and ding). The lion mask handles symbolize protection and strength, guarding spiritual spaces while serving as functional handles for heavy ritual hearths and altar bowls. Cast through heavy mold methods and finished on a lathe, the piece showcases high-relief facial features framed by stylized, spiraling mane details and a thick flat rim collar.
