Overview
A vintage hand-carved wood fruit bowl with a music box built into the base. The oval bowl has a pierced border of grape clusters and vine leaves, a carved medallion of overlapping leaves in the center, and two looped handles carved like vine branches with notched bark texture. The bowl sits on a turned round base that holds the music movement, with four small turned feet underneath. The wood has a warm medium-brown finish with darker tones in the carving. It suits a dining table, sideboard or kitchen shelf, or a collection of carved woodwork or music boxes.
Background
Carved wooden fruit and bread bowls with music boxes in the base were popular European souvenir pieces through the mid-20th century, and grape-vine designs like this one were among the most common. This bowl and its movement are unmarked; the paper label on the bottom is blank. The movement is a cylinder type with a pinned brass cylinder and a steel comb, mounted on a removable wooden base plate with a ring-pull winder and a wire start lever underneath. The bowl dates to circa 1950-1980.
Condition
Good vintage condition with wear. The music does not play. The movement appears complete, but it has not been tested further, so the music box is sold as is. The carving has small chips along the rim and handles, with pale bare wood showing in a few spots, and light wear to the finish. The base plate and feet are attached. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The bowl measures 3.3 x 12 x 7.5 inches (H x W x D), with the width taken across the handles. It weighs 1 lb 1 oz.
