Overview
A vintage carved bovine bone inro with two stacking cases and a fitted lid, strung on a dark brown braided cord. The upper case has a recessed panel of two rabbits carved in relief, one with a small red-tinted eye. The lower case shows two fish side by side with carved scales and round inset eyes. The oval lid is pierced through in openwork, with a bird among leaves. The bovine bone has a warm cream color with light honey toning in the carved areas. It suits a curio cabinet, desk or small display shelf, and the cord lets it hang as well.
Background
Inro are small stacked cases first worn hanging from the sash of traditional Japanese dress, used to carry small items such as seals and medicine. In East Asian folklore the rabbit is linked with the moon, and carp are a common sign of perseverance. This piece is unsigned and unmarked. Both cases are hollowed out, fit together on short raised rims, and the cord runs through channels on each side.
Condition
Good vintage condition with no breaks, cracks or repairs seen. Both cases and the lid separate and fit back together well. There is amber-colored staining along the bottom edge and light toning across the surface, and the cord tips are frayed. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The inro is 2.2 x 1.5 x 1.0 inches (H x W x D) and weighs about 2.3 oz.
