Overview
A vintage British military portable galvanometer in lacquered brass, complete with its fitted leather carrying case. The round drum-shaped body has a thick glass front over a silvered scale marked "GALVANOMETER" that reads 60-0-60, with a long fine pointer. Through the glass you can see the moving-coil mechanism, with its copper coil, spherical core and brass fittings. The dial is marked "No 72" and "59 Ω", and a small diamond-shaped maker's logo sits on the movement. Two knurled brass terminals at the bottom also act as feet. The stitched leather case has a shoulder strap and a red lining. It makes a strong display piece for a desk, study or bookshelf, or for a collection of scientific instruments or military items.
Background
Galvanometers detect and measure small electric currents and were used to test electrical circuits and signal lines. The back of this one is stamped with the British government broad arrow and the number "72", matching the dial, and the leather case is also stamped with a broad arrow, which shows both were issued for government or military use. The maker has not been identified; the diamond logo on the movement is the only maker's mark. The piece is not dated and is likely early to mid 20th century. It weighs 2 lb 14.6 oz with its case.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The glass has no cracks, though there is some dust inside under the glass. The brass shows light scratches and wear to the lacquer. The pointer returns to zero when the pin on the back is pressed, but it does not swing freely, so the instrument is untested and sold as a display piece. The leather case is intact, with scuffs, a dry and cracked strap end, and wear to the red lining. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The instrument measures 5 x 4 x 2 inches (H x W x D). Together with the leather case, it weighs 2 lb 14.6 oz.
