Description
Cultural & Historical Background
Mid-20th century Brazilian woodworking reached exceptional artistic height through specialized marquetry (marquetaria) workshops in Paraná and Rio de Janeiro. This octagonal wooden box was crafted by Rigotto & Michels LTDA, a well-regarded manufacturer based in Curitiba, Paraná, South America. The underside retains its original vintage maker's paper label printed in Portuguese reading "Indústria Brasileira - Rigotto & Michels - Curitiba - Paraná" alongside its original factory stock number.
The lid features an exquisite inlaid wood scene depicting the world-famous landmark Pão de Açúcar (Sugarloaf Mountain) overlooking Guanabara Bay in Rio de Janeiro. Masterfully constructed using natural native Brazilian timber veneers in contrasting shades of amber, walnut, and ebony tone wood, the composition is anchored by a lone silhouette of a royal palm tree (Roystonea oleracea) in the foreground.
The perimeter of the chamfered lid and the base box wall are finished with fine geometric diamond inlay banding. This piece stands as an authentic sample of mid-century South American souvenir art and decorative woodwork, ideal for storing jewelry, keepsakes, or desktop items.
