Description
A heavy, authentic vintage cast brass mold used for making Kuih Bahulu—traditional Malay/Peranakan mini sponge cakes often served during festivals like Hari Raya or Chinese New Year.
Unlike wooden mooncake molds used for pressing dough, this heavy metal pan was designed to hold liquid batter and be placed over heat (traditionally charcoal). This piece features a beautiful array of 8 deep-relief molds:
Center: A detailed Koi Fish (symbolizing abundance and perseverance).
Surrounding: A mix of auspicious shapes including a pomegranate (fertility), seashells, and floral rosettes.
Key features:
Authenticity: The blackened underside confirms this piece was used in the traditional manner over an open flame or charcoal.
Design: The "Fish" motif is highly prized in Kuih molds.
Construction: Solid, heavy-gauge brass that retains heat well.
Decor Potential: While functional, these are now highly collectible as rustic wall decor for kitchens or Asian-inspired interiors.
A wonderful piece of Southeast Asian culinary history.
