Overview
This pair of vintage hand-carved Balinese wooden sculptures showcases the master woodcarving traditions of Sanur, Denpasar. The collection features two distinct figurative interpretations: a warm reddish-brown carving of the Hindu deity Lord Vishnu mounted atop his mythical divine steed, Garuda, and a tall, slender openwork totemic column in pale natural hardwood detailing a multi-tiered Hindu mythic narrative. These pieces offer rich sculptural relief, dramatic negative space, and organic texture, making them ideal architectural focal points for shelf styling, credenza centerpieces, or Japandi and Global Eclectic interior arrangements.
Deep Cultural & Historical Background
Balinese woodcarving represents one of the most celebrated material culture traditions in Southeast Asia, centered heavily in regional carving enclaves like Sanur and Mas. The shorter, dark-stained piece depicts the Garuda Wisnu Kencana motif—Lord Vishnu seated upon Garuda, the bird king symbolising speed, martial protection, and cosmic order. The underside bears an authentic period inscription reading "PROJECT LAUNCH P3KT-BUP 2-4 Juli '97," marking its origin as part of a mid-1990s regional artisan development release.
The tall, pale openwork sculpture is carved from light-grained indigenous hardwood (traditionally waru/hibiscus wood) with continuous pierced relief. It displays a vertical hierarchy: a seated meditating deity or priest in a base alcove, a central female celestial figure (apsara or Dewi Sri), and a crowning Garuda motif at the summit. The underside retains its original handwritten studio label reading "Yda. Bg. Hl. Mas. Tukang Togog. Sindu-Sanur. Denpasar/Bali", attributing the piece directly to a master sculptor (tukang togog) operating in the Sindu Beach area of Sanur, Denpasar.
Condition & Surface Character
Both sculptures show age-appropriate wear, natural wood grain variation, and structural chips/losses consistent with delicate openwork wood carving:
Reddish-Brown Garuda Figure: Displays a deep amber stain finish. Structural condition includes noticeable breakage and loss to several feather tips along the top left arc of the flame halo backdrop, alongside minor edge chipping on the rear motif features and light surface abrasions.
Pale Openwork Totem Figure: Carved from pale cream-colored wood with natural surface patination. Displays a fracture and loss along the slender openwork connecting vine/branch supporting the upper figure's torso section, along with small stress fractures natural to hand-pierced wood grain.
