Vintage Articulated Carved Wood Snake Folk Art Figurine Pair 16" Sculpture Set

Overview
This striking pair of 16-inch hand-carved, hand-painted wooden serpents captures the dynamic beauty of kinetic folk art woodworking. Featuring two distinctly patterned snakes—one in deep charcoal-black with golden-yellow chevron markings, and the other in a soft sage-olive tone with intricate painted scale details—each piece is crafted with micro-articulated jointed segments. When held at a single pivot point or moved across a surface, the interconnected vertebrae flex smoothly to replicate the natural, undulating motion of a living snake. Perfect as desk sculptures, shelf styling accents, or centerpiece features for Global Eclectic, Mid-Century Modern, and Wabi-Sabi interiors, this pair comes with complimentary, fully insured standard shipping.
Deep Cultural & Historical Background
Articulated wooden creatures occupy a unique niche within Sub-Saharan African woodworking and broader global folk craft traditions. Artisans select lightweight native hardwoods, carefully shaping the elongated body before hand-sawing it into dozens of precise, interlocking wedge segments. Threaded along an internal cord assembly, these individual wooden blocks interact under gravity to create fluid, lifelike movement without external mechanical parts.
In regional zoomorphic symbolism, the snake serves as a powerful emblem of regeneration, agility, earth connection, and spiritual protection. The polychrome surfaces of this pair feature hand-applied pigment detailing: the dark serpent displays contrasting golden geometric bands along its spine, while the lighter serpent exhibits delicate cross-hatched linear work. Both heads are individually carved with expressive facial contours and vibrant red pigment accents at the mouth.
Condition & Surface Character
Both articulated sculptures are in excellent vintage condition with fully operational jointing. The internal stringing maintains proper tension, allowing continuous, fluid movement across all segments. The original polychrome paint finish shows minor age-appropriate surface wear, subtle patina, and light handling marks that enhance their vintage character while preserving the structural integrity of the timber.
