Overview
A vintage hand-carved wood sculpture from Ghana with two tall, elongated heads standing side by side on a curved stool. One head wears a smooth cap topped with a small knob, and the other has a combed hairstyle carved in a herringbone pattern. Both faces have arched brows, half-closed eyes, long straight noses and small mouths, and they rise from ringed necks. Below the stool, a reclining figure holds up the seat with one arm and one bent leg, and the rectangular base is carved with wave lines. The stool seat has an incised triangle pattern. The wood has a dark reddish-brown finish with a soft sheen, and the piece suits a bookshelf, mantel, desk or sideboard.
Background
Elongated heads, ringed necks and stool forms are well-known features of Akan carving from Ghana, and carvers continue to work in this tradition for decorative pieces. This sculpture is carved from a single piece of wood and is unsigned. The underside has a printed label reading "Handcrafted in Ghana."
Condition
Good vintage condition with no breaks, cracks or repairs. There is light surface wear, including small scuffs on the backs of the heads and minor nicks along the edges of the base. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The sculpture measures 15.2 x 5.5 x 2.0 inches (H x W x D) and weighs about 1 lb 4.5 oz.
