Overview
A vintage hand-carved and painted wood figure of a standing woman from Ghana. She has an oval face with arched brows, outlined almond eyes, a straight nose and full lips, and a carved hairstyle in a herringbone pattern picked out in yellow. Her long neck is carved with rings, and her arms are held straight at her sides. She wears a red dress with shoulder straps, a yellow line down the center and three black tabs on the front, and she stands on a round red base with carved toes on her feet. The black, red and yellow paint gives the piece strong color, and it suits a shelf, mantel, desk or sideboard.
Background
The ringed neck, carved hairstyle and stylized face are well-known features of Akan figure carving from Ghana, and carvers continue to work in this tradition for decorative pieces. This figure is carved from a single piece of wood and painted by hand. It is unsigned, and a small remnant of a paper label remains on the underside of the base.
Condition
Good vintage condition with no breaks or repairs. There is light paint wear and small scuffs on raised edges, and some rough wood fibers where the feet meet the base from the original carving. Please see all photos.
