Overview
A large vintage Akua'ba figure, hand-carved in wood in Ghana. The tall, round disc head is painted black, with a ring of gold-painted triangles around the top and a gold diamond shape on the forehead. The face has arched brows that meet a long straight nose, almond eyes and a small mouth, and both cheeks are filled with a fine dotted pattern in white and orange. Below, a ringed neck leads to short outstretched arms, small breasts and a slim body that ends in a ringed, flared base so the figure stands on its own. The body has a warm reddish-brown finish, and the back of the head is plain wood. At almost 22 inches tall, it makes a strong display piece for a shelf, mantel, console or wall niche.
Background
Akua'ba figures, with their round disc heads, ringed necks and outstretched arms, are among the best-known carvings of the Akan people of Ghana and are traditionally associated with fertility. Large standing versions like this one were carved as display pieces. This figure is carved from a single piece of wood and is unsigned. An old paper label remains on the underside of the base.
Condition
Good vintage condition with no breaks or repairs. There is light wear and small scuffs to the black paint, mainly around the edge of the head, light scuffs on the body, and a small drying split at the bottom edge of the base. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The figure measures 21.8 x 7.5 x 3.4 inches (H x W x D) and weighs about 1 lb 4.5 oz.
