Overview
A vintage hand-carved African wooden face mask painted in red, yellow ochre and dark brown. Bold diagonal stripes run across the cheeks and meet in a chevron at the chin, and small incised cross marks sit on each cheek. Across the forehead are carved bands: a row of triangles at the top, plain yellow and red bands, and a band of cross-hatched diamonds above the brows. The eyes are narrow pierced slits set in raised oval frames, the long straight nose has two small drilled nostrils, and the open oval mouth is pierced through. It makes a strong piece for a wall, a gallery grouping or a shelf display.
Background
Carved and painted face masks like this one have long been made in many parts of Central and West Africa. This mask is unmarked and undated. It is carved from a single piece of light wood, and the hollowed back shows tool marks from the carving. Small holes are drilled around the rim, and a clear wire has been threaded through two side holes on the back for hanging.
Condition
Good vintage condition with no breaks or repairs seen. The paint is worn and rubbed in places, especially on the nose, eye rims and lips, and the top edge is worn and slightly uneven. Please see all photos.
