Overview Crafted from dense, heavy cast brass with a rich golden sheen, this vintage commemorative medallion celebrates the May 18, 1972 opening of One First Virginia Plaza in Falls Church, Virginia. The face features a high-relief dimensional carving of a Flowering Dogwood blossom (Cornus florida), complete with detailed petal veining, textured center stamen cluster, and a delicate stem enclosed within a rope-patterned outer rim. The reverse displays crisp die-stamped corporate typography and emblems within a recessed central field. Ideal as an executive desk paperweight, coin dish, or regional historical highlight, this piece includes complimentary standard shipping. Deep Cultural & Historical Background This commemorative piece was issued to mark the official dedication of First Virginia Bank’s headquarters at One First Virginia Plaza (6400 Arlington Blvd, Falls Church, VA) on May 18, 1972. First Virginia Bank was one of the Commonwealth's premier mid-century financial institutions. The dogwood motif on the front pays homage to the official State Flower and State Tree of Virginia, adopted by the General Assembly in 1918. Symbolizing endurance, rebirth, and Southern hospitality, the dogwood remains a deeply cherished icon of Virginian heritage. The reverse bears the corporate crest alongside the designation "3-9 DOGWOOD" and a trapezoid cartouche stamped "ONE FIRST VIRGINIA PLAZA 5-18-72." Condition & Surface Character The medallion retains excellent structural integrity with a smooth perimeter edge and crisp relief detailing on both sides. The brass metal exhibits a warm vintage patina with soft surface micro-abrasions and gentle oxidation consistent with age and desktop handling. Natural darkening within the recessed text fields enhances legibility and accentuates the sculptural depth of the dogwood petals.
