Overview
A Victorian silverplate coffee pot by Reed & Barton with an urn-shaped body on a stepped pedestal foot. The spout ends in a cast eagle head with a hooked beak, and rows of raised beading circle the cover, the shoulder and the foot. Chased leaves cup the lower body above the pedestal, and the domed hinged cover is topped by a tall urn finial. The angular handle has a scrolled thumb rest and two cream-colored spacer rings. The surface shows a warm mix of silver and golden tones from age and wear. It suits a sideboard, buffet, shelf or mantel, or a period tea and coffee display.
Background
Reed & Barton of Taunton, Massachusetts, was one of the leading American makers of silverplated hollowware in the 19th century. This pot is stamped on the underside "REED & BARTON" with pattern number 1927 and size number 5; the 1927 is the pattern number, not the year it was made. The form and marks point to the late 19th century, circa 1870-1900. Inside, a pierced strainer covers the spout opening.
Condition
Good antique condition. The lid hinge works and the cover closes properly, with no dents, leaks or loose parts seen. The plating is worn in many areas of the body, cover and spout, with the base metal showing through, and there is tarnish, light scratching and darkening inside. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The pot measures 10.5 x 9.4 x 5.0 inches (H x W x D), with the width measured from handle to spout. It weighs 1 lb 14.1 oz.
