Overview
An antique American silverplate dish by Barbour Bros. Co. of Hartford, Connecticut. The dish is an elongated oval with a deep scalloped, lobed rim. Inside the rim, a raised repousse garland of large daisy-like flowers, roses, berry clusters and leafy sprays wraps around a smooth oval center, with a small scrolled border at the edge of the well. The background is finely stippled, which makes the flowers stand out. The silver has a dark, unpolished tarnish that settles into the low areas and gives the relief good depth. It works well as a trinket or ring dish on a dresser, a catchall on an entry table, or a display piece on a shelf or sideboard.
Background
Ornate repousse silverplate dishes like this were popular in American homes in the late 19th century. The underside carries a round stamped mark reading "BARBOUR BROS. CO.", "SILVER" and "QUADRUPLE". Barbour Bros. Co. was a Hartford silverplate maker active in the 1880s and early 1890s, before the Barbour name later became part of International Silver, so this dish dates to about 1881 to 1892. Quadruple plate was a common marking of the period for a heavier coat of silver plate.
Condition
Good antique condition with no cracks, holes, repairs or bent rim. There is overall tarnish, scratches and light wear to the silver in the center well and on the underside, consistent with age and use. It has not been polished, and the maker's mark is clear and easy to read. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The dish measures 7.3 x 5.3 x 0.8 inches (W x D x H) and weighs about 5.5 oz (156 g).
