Overview
Two vintage silver plated gravy boats, sold together. The first stands on three cabriole legs with shell-shaped tops and pad feet, with a beaded rim, a long pouring lip and a tall open scroll handle. It has deep, colorful tarnish in gold, blue and bronze tones. The second sits on an oval stepped pedestal foot, with a plain rim and a cast scroll handle with leaf and rope detail. It is brighter, with a soft golden tarnish. They are not a matching pair, but they work well side by side for gravy and sauce at a holiday table, or as display pieces on a sideboard or shelf.
Background
The three-footed boat follows the 18th-century Georgian sauce boat shape, and the pedestal boat follows the later oval form. Both shapes stayed popular in silver plated tableware through the 1900s. Neither piece has a maker's mark or stamp. Both have silver plated bodies with cast handles, and the pair weighs 1 lb 4.3 oz together.
Condition
Good vintage condition with no dents, breaks or repairs. The footed boat has heavy tarnish, spotting and scratches, with a small worn spot on the underside. The pedestal boat has light tarnish, surface scratches and wear inside the bowl. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The footed boat measures 4.5 x 8 x 3.5 inches (H x W x D). The pedestal boat measures 3.6 x 8 x 4.6 inches (H x W x D). The width is taken from the lip to the handle. Together they weigh 1 lb 4.3 oz (about 575 g).
