Overview
A pair of Thai thon goblet hand drums with python skin heads. Each drum has a rounded bowl, a narrow waist and a flared foot, turned from wood and finished in a glossy reddish-orange coat that shows the grain. The heads are held on with white cord laced down to a wire ring at the neck, and more cord is wrapped around the lower body. A long cord comes with the pair. The scale pattern of the skins, in brown, black and gold, gives the drums a striking look. They can be played or shown together on a shelf, mantel or side table.
Background
The thon is a goblet-shaped hand drum used in Thai music, often played as a pair. These two are unmarked, and their age is unknown. The heads are python skin, and the bodies are hollow turned wood with an open bottom.
Condition
Good used condition. Both heads are intact with no tears. There is some lifting and flaking of the scales around the edges, a small scuffed patch on one head, and light marks to the finish. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
Each drum measures 9 inches tall with a 4.5-inch head and a 4.5-inch base. The pair weighs 2 lb 4.5 oz.
Shipping
Free standard shipping within the US, packed securely. Because the heads are python skin, this item ships within the US only and cannot be shipped to California.
