Overview
A sterling silver pedestal compote with a wide, flat rim decorated in raised repousse leaf and scroll work. A fine beaded band runs around the inner edge of the rim, framing a smooth, round bowl with stepped rings in the well. The bowl sits on a short knopped stem and a round stepped foot. The raised leaves are bright, with darker tone in the recesses, which gives the border good depth. It suits candy, nuts or small treats on a dining table, sideboard or dresser, or as a display piece on a shelf.
Background
Footed compotes with chased or repousse borders were popular serving pieces in silver through the late 19th and 20th centuries. This piece is solid sterling and is not weighted: the stem and foot are hollow, so all of its weight is silver. It has been tested as sterling silver. It has no readable maker's mark. The single stamped mark on the foot rim, which appears to contain three characters, and the unweighted construction suggest Continental European manufacture, but the mark is too worn to read clearly.
Condition
Good condition for its age. There is tarnish on the underside of the bowl, the stem and the foot, light scratches in the bowl and some wear to the high points of the rim. A few small green spots on the underside should clean off. No breaks or repairs seen. Please see all photos.
