Overview
A pair of cast iron bookends by San Pacific International (SPI), each modeled as a standing long-necked bird holding an open book. The raised wings curve forward around the book, and the inside pages are cast with lines of script. Each bird stands on webbed feet on an irregular textured base, with its head tilted upward. The feathers are cast in detail across the wings and back. The finish is a green verdigris patina with bronze-brown highlights on the raised areas, and one bird is slightly greener than the other. They suit a bookshelf, desk or study, and they are heavy enough to hold a row of hardcovers.
Background
San Pacific International is a San Francisco company known for decorative bookends and animal sculptures for the home. The SPI label on the underside reads "San Pacific Int'l, SPI, San Francisco USA, Made in China." The bookends are solid cast iron and magnetic, and the bases are lined with black foam pads.
Condition
Good pre-owned condition with no breaks or visible repairs. The patina shows natural color variation and light wear on the high points. The foam pads have small dents, marks and some lint. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
Each bookend is about 8 x 4.2 x 4 inches (H x W x D). The pair weighs 5 lb 11.6 oz.
