Overview
A silverplated teapot marked by Reed & Barton, model number 2626. It has an Egyptian Revival design. A seated sphinx sits on top of the lobed, hinged lid. The body is engraved with a sunburst panel showing a sailboat, along with flowers, a bird and geometric patterns. A band of rosettes runs around the collar, and the spout has a leaf panel. The teapot stands on four splayed legs, each with a rosette. The angular handle has cast decoration and two white insulator rings.
Background
The base is stamped "MF'D & PLATED BY / REED & BARTON / 2626 / 6 / PATENT APPL'ED FOR". Reed & Barton was a silver maker in Taunton, Massachusetts, founded in 1824. Sphinxes and other Egyptian motifs were popular on American silverplate in the late 1800s, and the mark and design fit that period.
Condition
Tarnished and unpolished. The hinged lid opens and closes. The insulator rings have not been tested for material. Please see the photos for surface wear and plating.
