Overview
A pair of figural bookends by Philadelphia Manufacturing Company (PMC), each modeled after Auguste Rodin's famous sculpture The Thinker. Each seated figure leans forward with his chin resting on one hand and his elbow on his knee, with the muscles of the back, arms and legs clearly modeled. The figures have a bright brass-tone finish, set on textured, rock-like bases in a dark bronze tone. The two are mirror images, so they face each other on the shelf. They suit a bookshelf, desk, study or office, and they are heavy enough to hold a row of hardcovers.
Background
Rodin's The Thinker has been reproduced in many forms since the early 20th century, and figural bookends of this kind were popular for home libraries and offices. One bookend keeps its red felt base and the original gold PMC label reading "The Finest of American Craftsmanship, Philadelphia Manufacturing Company, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania." The bookends are cast in a white, nonmagnetic base metal with a brass-tone finish, and they are not solid brass or bronze.
Condition
Good pre-owned condition with no breaks or repairs. The figures show light scratches and some finish wear, and the base edges show wear where the lighter metal shows through. One bookend is missing its felt, so its hollow underside is exposed, with oxidation, discoloration and old glue residue inside. The other bookend's felt is intact, with some lint. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
Each bookend is about 6 x 4.2 x 2.4 inches (H x W x D). The pair weighs 5 lb 12 oz.
