Overview
A pair of figural bookends by Philadelphia Manufacturing Company (PMC), each with a leaping fish rising from a stylized curling wave. The fish have spotted, textured bodies, raised dorsal fins, round eyes and open mouths, much like a trout. On one bookend the fish leaps forward over the wave, and on the other it arches back with the wave curling behind it. The gold-tone finish is set on rectangular dark brown bases. They suit a bookshelf, desk, cabin or lake house, and they are heavy enough to hold a row of hardcovers.
Background
Figural fish and nautical bookends were popular decorative pieces for the home and office through the mid 20th century. One base carries the original PMC label reading "Hand Cast Quality Metalware, Plated and Lacquered for permanence, Philadelphia Mfg. Co., Phila., Pa." The bookends are cast metal with a plated gold-tone finish, and the bases are lined with burgundy felt.
Condition
Pre-owned condition with one important flaw. One bookend has a visible crack across the wave support beneath the fish, shown in the close-up photo. The bookend is very firm, with no movement at the crack. Both show scratches, wear and some discoloration to the finish, with the lighter base metal showing in places, and the bases have small scuffs. The felt is worn, with lint. Please see all photos, especially the close-up of the crack.
Dimensions & Weight
Each bookend is about 6.5 x 5 x 3 inches (H x W x D). The pair weighs 6 lb 14.3 oz.
