Overview
A pair of solid brass elephant bookends by PM Craftsman, each modeled as a baby elephant sitting back with its trunk curled up over its head. The elephants have large ears, open smiling mouths, wrinkled detail around the eyes and trunk, and rounded feet with cast toenails. The brushed golden brass has darker toning in the recesses, which brings out the modeling of the faces and ears. The two figures are mirror images, so they face each other on the shelf. They suit a bookshelf, desk, nursery shelf or mantel, and they are heavy enough to hold a row of hardcovers.
Background
Figural brass bookends were popular decorative pieces for the home through the mid and late 20th century, and PM Craftsman produced many animal and library designs. One base carries the original PM Craftsman label reading "Hand Craftsmanship, Lakeland, Florida." The castings are solid and heavy, and the bases are lined with brown felt.
Condition
Good pre-owned condition with no breaks or repairs. There are light scratches and scuffs, some uneven toning and paler worn patches on the backs, and small spots of green oxidation on the feet of one elephant. The felt is intact, with some lint. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
Each bookend is about 5 x 4 x 4 inches (H x W x D). The pair weighs 5 lb 12.8 oz.
