Overview A striking paired set of vintage Brutalist studio pottery vases, paired with complementary dark brown glazed terracotta pedestal bases from Crate & Barrel. Featuring warm ochre-sienna gradient bodies, ebonized rims, and a central band of hand-incised geometric sgraffito texturing, these vessels serve as high-impact accent pieces for credenzas, consoles, or mantel displays. Includes complimentary, fully insured standard shipping. Deep Cultural & Historical Background Embodying the tactile minimalism of Mid-Century Modern and Brutalist ceramic traditions, these bulbous urns display a textured central register evocative of ancient architectural brickwork or cuneiform reliefs. The fabrication combines hand-turned forming with sgraffito and stamping techniques: an ebonized oxide wash is worked into the recessed geometric grooves while the smooth shoulder and neck receive a warm sienna-stained glaze finish. The accompanying pedestal bases—originally crafted in India for Crate & Barrel as heavy ceramic pillar holders—elevate the vessels into imposing architectural artifacts, adding grounding presence and structural height. Condition & Surface Character Excellent vintage condition with structural integrity across all four pieces. The ceramic bodies exhibit clean matte finishes with crisp incised detailing and rich tonal depth. The ebonized flared rims and interior cavities are intact. The accompanying ceramic pedestal bases retain their dark brown glaze, showing minor age-appropriate surface scuffs and minor edge glaze micro-wear that blend seamlessly into the rustic, hand-finished aesthetic. Factory labels remain preserved along the undersides of the bases.
