Overview A extraordinary pair of vintage mid-century Balinese hand-carved hardwood figures capturing two central characters of traditional Balinese theatrical dance. The taller figure depicts Rangda, the formidable Demon Queen of Balinese mythology, carved with her signature pendulous breasts, bulging eyes, long fangs, and a protruding tongue reaching down her torso. The companion figure depicts a serene male court dancer wearing a crested headcloth (udeng) while holding a hand fan (kipas). Rendered in a warm reddish-amber hardwood, this dual ensemble serves as a compelling display for shadow boxes, bookends, or mantelpieces within Balinese, Art Deco, Wabi-Sabi, or Eclectic interior settings. Cultural & Artistic Background In Balinese Hinduism, Rangda embodies the cosmic force of destruction and magic within the ritual dance drama of Barong and Rangda. Representing the concept of Rwa Bhineda (the balance of opposing forces in the universe), Rangda is portrayed in classic theatrical form with wild cascading hair, fangs, and a long pendulous tongue symbolizing fiery power. Paired alongside the graceful court dancer, this set juxtaposes the fierce, sacred power of mythology with the refined elegance of human performance art. Condition & Surface Character • Excellent structural condition throughout both figures, carved solid with no chips, cracks, or missing hair flames. • Warm mahogany-reddish finish with a soft hand-rubbed satin sheen highlighting the underlying wood grain. • Intricate relief detailing across Rangda's hair tresses, facial features, and the dancer's udeng headcloth. • Light, authentic age-appropriate surface dust in tight carved recesses consistent with mid-century cabinet display. Dimensions & Weight • Rangda Figure: Height: 5 inches | Width: 1.5 inches | Depth: 1.3 inches • Dancer Figure: Height: 4.3 inches | Width: 2 inches | Depth: 1.3 inches
