Overview
A matching pair of tall metal pedestal stands with engraved Tuareg decoration. Each stand has a shallow square tray with a raised rim, a flared neck below the tray, a stepped column made of alternating square and diamond-shaped segments, and a wide pyramid-shaped base. The trays, columns and bases are covered with engraved dotted lines, small four-point cross motifs, circles and triangle bands. The finish is a reddish-brown patina with darker and lighter areas. They work well as a matching pair on a console, mantel or either side of an entry, holding candles, small plants or light decorative objects.
Background
The Tuareg peoples of the Sahara, in Niger, Mali and southern Algeria, are known for metalwork decorated with dotted lines, crosses and triangles like those engraved on these stands. The stands are made of a magnetic, iron-based metal and are heavy for their size. They are unsigned, with no maker's mark, and the bottoms are covered with black felt. The exact age and workshop have not been established.
Condition
Good pre-owned condition with no breaks or missing parts. There are scattered scratches, light rubbing and uneven patina, mostly on the tray edges and bases. The black felt on the bottoms is worn and has dust and lint. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
Each stand is 19 x 5.8 x 5.8 inches (H x W x D), about 48.3 x 14.7 x 14.7 cm. Together the pair weighs 15 lb 9.7 oz. Two stands, sold together.
