Overview
A pair of carved wood Thai Thepphanom figures, the celestial attendants often seen in Thai Buddhist art. Each figure stands upright with its palms pressed together at the chest in the wai gesture of respect. They wear tall tiered crowns that rise to a slender pointed finial, with carved ear ornaments, broad shoulder collars with incised flower patterns, and layered skirts with diamond and flower designs. The faces are calm, with lowered eyes and a slight smile. The gold-tone finish has red undertones in the recesses, which gives the carving depth, and the backs are fully carved as well. They suit a shelf, mantel or console, and they work well placed on either side of a doorway or altar.
Background
Thepphanom figures, shown with joined hands and tall pointed crowns, are a familiar subject in Thai temple art and in Thai woodcarving made for the home. This pair is unsigned, with no maker's mark; one base has a handwritten marking in ink. Each figure is carved from wood and stands on a round base carved with crosshatched bands, and the undersides are bare wood. The exact age has not been established.
Condition
Good pre-owned condition with no breaks or visible repairs. The gold finish has scattered scratches, rubbing and small areas of loss where the red undercoat shows through, mostly on the high points, hands and bases. The undersides show marks and some discoloration. Please see all photos.
