Overview
A matching pair of elephant figures, each standing on a stepped pedestal base. Both elephants have raised, curled trunks and wear ceremonial trappings: a patterned headpiece with tassels, a saddlecloth with raised sunburst and floral motifs and zigzag borders, and banded anklets. The figures have a faux ivory cream finish with darker shading in the recesses, which brings out the detail. The bases have a reddish-brown finish with black trim lines. Each piece is heavy, and the pair suits a bookshelf, mantel or desk, where they can also serve as bookends.
Background
Ornamented elephants dressed for processions and festivals are a long-standing subject in the decorative arts of India and Southeast Asia. This pair is cast resin, not ivory, and the bases appear to be resin with a wood-look finish. The undersides are covered in black felt, with a gold "Made in China" sticker.
Condition
Good condition with no obvious damage or repairs to the elephants. The bases have scattered scratches, small chips and finish loss along the corners and edges, and the felt undersides show lint and wear. Please see all photos.
