Overview
A large and ornate fireplace tool set with a cast brass stand in a hunting theme, offered with seven hearth tools. The stand's stem is cast as a leafy branch, with a long rifle and a draped hunting bag leaning against it and a hunting horn at the crossbar. The top is a looped wreath of leaves, and the two side arms are trimmed with foliage to hold the tools. At the base, a hunting dog lies at rest on a naturalistic ground of grasses and leaves, raised on four scrolled feet. The brass has a soft golden tone with darker toning in the recesses. It makes a handsome piece beside a fireplace, or in a library, den or lodge-style room.
Background
Hunting-themed fireplace sets with sporting dogs, guns and foliage are a traditional European design, and sets of this type were popular through the 20th century. This stand is unmarked. The seven tools are a pierced brass shovel, a brass poker, brass tongs and a hearth brush with a brass handle, along with two plain iron shovels and an iron hook poker. The iron tools have different handles from the brass ones and appear to have been added to the set later.
Condition
Good vintage condition with no breaks or repairs seen on the stand. The brass shows toning, wear and some dark spots, and the iron shovels and poker show surface rust, discoloration and wear from hearth use. The brush bristles show wear. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The stand is about 21.5 x 12 x 9 inches (H x W x D). The tools range from about 19 to 26.5 inches long. The full set weighs about 21.2 lb.
