Overview
An exquisite studio pair of vintage Southwestern sgraffito pottery vessels showcasing quintessential Diné (Navajo) earthenware artistry. This two-piece set features a low, squat sky-turquoise seed jar signed by Navajo artisan G. Frank alongside an hourglass-shaped vessel with a dual-tone sage green to natural terracotta ombre finish. Both pieces display precise hand-incised sgraffito motifs, smooth matte exterior slips, and fully glazed cream interiors. Perfect for shelf styling, mantel displays, credenza focal points, or Southwestern modern interior curations, this collectible pair includes complimentary, fully insured standard shipping directly to your door.
Deep Cultural & Historical Background
Originating in the American Southwest, sgraffito—derived from the Italian word sgraffire meaning "to scratch"—became a hallmark technique among Indigenous potters during the mid-to-late 20th century revival. Potters apply contrasting colored clay slips over a hand-formed clay body before meticulously carving through the wet or leather-hard surface using fine tipped tools.
The low turquoise vessel highlights iconic Diné symbolism: pine tree/arrowhead forms representing strength and direction, four-pointed directional stars symbolizing guidance, and stepped mountain rain symbols invoking environmental blessing and balance. The companion hourglass vase displays carved diamond window grids, directional arrows, and stepped kiva motifs celebrating sacred geometry. The vibrant turquoise matte slip evokes sacred protective stones, while the warm terracotta grounding reflects traditional open-air firing traditions of the high desert plateau.
Condition & Surface Character
Both pieces remain in excellent vintage condition with superior structural integrity and no chips, cracks, or structural repairs. The sgraffito line work remains crisp and clearly defined against the smooth matte clay slip. The base of the turquoise vessel retains four original felt protective pads preserving the hand-incised signature G. Frank --Navajo--. The hourglass vessel retains its incised artisan signature Varnett and registry numerals on its base, exhibiting minimal handling wear consistent with vintage display provenance.
