Overview
A museum cast of a classical Gupta-period Buddha head, made by the Ateliers de Moulage, the casting workshop of the French national museums. The face is calm and gently smiling, with downcast eyes, arched brows, long earlobes and a rounded ushnisha covered in small tight curls. The surface has a warm buff, sandstone-like finish, and the lower neck is shaped as a broken edge, as on the original stone fragment. The head is mounted on a black metal rod set into a square block base with a wood-grain finish. It suits a bookshelf, desk, mantel or console table, or a quiet corner for reading or meditation.
Background
The Gupta period (about the 4th to 6th centuries CE) in northern India produced some of the best-known images of the Buddha, and museum workshops have long made authorized casts of such pieces for the public. The underside of the base has a molded seal reading "Musée du Louvre … Ateliers de Moulage," the underside of the neck carries a small stamped roundel with the workshop's script "m" mark, and a "Made in France" label is fixed to the base. The head is a cast, not carved stone.
Condition
Good pre-owned condition. The head is intact, and the broken neck edge is part of the original design. There are a few small white scuffs on the edges and corners of the base. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The piece stands 10.3 inches tall on its base; the head alone is about 5 inches tall. It is 4 inches wide and 3.5 inches deep, and weighs about 2 lb 13.1 oz.
