Overview
A large mid-century brass tray table with a 29.8-inch engraved round tray on a six-leg folding wood spider base. The center medallion shows a bird among leafy branches, ringed by bands of triangles, crosses, scrolls and small leaf sprigs. Around it, panels separated by dotted bands show peacocks with fanned tails and other birds among flowering branches. A wide engraved rim with triangle and cross borders ends in a crimped, scalloped edge. The brass has an unpolished, warm golden patina. It works as a low coffee or tea table, and the tray can also be lifted off and hung on the wall using the hook on the back.
Background
Folding six-leg spider bases with brass-capped tips were made in Hong Kong for export tray tables through the 1960s and 1970s, often paired with large engraved brass trays like this one. This table is unmarked. The tray has a triangular hanging hook fixed to the back, and the legs swivel on a central plate so the base folds flat. The table dates to circa 1960-1980.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The brass shows natural oxidation, with scattered whitish and green spots and a few darker marks, including a small spot of corrosion near the center medallion, none of them significant. The back of the tray has handling marks and uneven toning. The wood base has light scuffs and finish wear, and the brass caps are toned. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The tray measures 29.8 inches in diameter. The base measures 18 x 22 x 22 inches (H x W x D). The table weighs 14.6 lb in total.
