Overview Carved from a single block of dense native timber, this authentic Mambila Tadep power figure is distinguished by a gesture with one hand raised thoughtfully to the chin and a rectangular ritual charge cavity carved into the upper back. Adorned with a perimeter crown of wooden pegs, heart-shaped facial contours, and kaolin clay highlights, this piece is mounted on a custom black stepped display stand. It serves as an expressive centerpiece for curated mantels, shelves, or credenzas across Wabi-Sabi, Japandi, and Modern Organic interior themes. Every order includes complimentary, fully insured standard domestic shipping. Deep Cultural & Historical Background In the ritual practices of the Mambila people along the West African highland borderlands, Tadep sculptures served as protective vessels for the Suaga association—a spiritual body responsible for justice, oaths, and ancestral intercession. The hand-to-chin posture represents reflection, vigilance, and spiritual concentration. A key feature of this figure is the deep, rectangular charge chamber carved directly into the upper spine, traditionally designed to hold medicinal or magical substances (bia) sealed by a ritual specialist to activate the figure’s power. The crown of driven wooden pegs contains the consecrated energy, while white kaolin clay framing the eyes and lower triangular waist motifs denotes contact with the ancestor realm. Condition & Surface Character The sculpture exhibits an authentic dry, matte earthen patina across its surface, accompanied by natural wood contraction, soft wear on the elevated hand carved relief, and stable age-related drying fissures along the legs and torso. Traces of original white kaolin and reddish earth pigments remain securely bonded within the carved recesses, highlighting its traditional hand-hewn origin.
