Mounted on a custom stepped black display stand, this sculpture makes an exceptional centerpiece for curated shelves, mantels, or credenzas in Wabi-Sabi, Modern Organic, or Global Eclectic interiors. Every purchase includes complimentary, fully insured standard domestic shipping.
Deep Cultural & Historical Background
In Mambila ritual tradition along the Nigeria-Cameroon border region, Tadep (or Tatep) figures were created for the Suaga association—a ancestral society dedicated to justice, healing, agricultural protection, and spiritual defense. The crown of wooden pegs driven along the perimeter of the head represents ritual activation and the containment of spiritual energy. The classic concave, heart-shaped face is accented with white kaolin clay surrounding the eyes and triangular waist motifs, symbolizing communion with the spirit world, while the raised nodular studs across the lower abdomen mark a sacral power chamber.
Condition & Surface Character
The sculpture exhibits an authentic dry, matte earthen patina with visible age-related wood contraction and minor, stable drying fissures along the base and torso. Mineral kaolin and red pigments remain preserved within the deeply carved relief sections, attesting to its traditional hand-hewn craftsmanship and age.
