Deep Cultural & Historical Background
Handcrafted in the Tabaka Hills region of southwestern Kenya, this piece stems from the world-renowned Kisii soapstone carving tradition. Local artisans quarry soft metamorphic steatite by hand, shaping the stone using traditional carving chisels before smoothing it through water-sanding. The high-contrast monochrome design is achieved by coating the carved surface in a dark mineral dye and meticulously hand-etching through the pigment—a technique known as sgraffito—to reveal the natural cream-colored stone beneath. In East African symbolism, the elephant represents strength, ancestral wisdom, and steadfast protection, while the interlocking diamond and chevron motifs signify heritage, unity, and abundance. The base retains its original vintage maker label reading "GENUINE SESMO PRODUCT HAND CARVED IN KENYA."
Condition & Surface Character
In excellent vintage condition with robust structural integrity. The lid fits securely onto the hollowed base, and both interior chambers remain smooth and clean. The high-contrast etched surface retains sharp detail throughout, with light, age-appropriate surface wear along the underside base rim.
