Overview
A seated figure of Ganesha, the elephant-headed Hindu god of beginnings and the remover of obstacles. He sits on an oval lotus base with four arms: the two upper hands each hold a conch shell, the lower right hand is raised with the palm facing out, and the lower left hand holds a sweet, toward which his trunk curls. He wears a tall tiered crown framed by a spiked halo, large ears with hanging ornaments, beaded necklaces, a red shawl and a blue dhoti. His small mouse mount sits at the front of the base, and the base is ringed with flower rosettes set with painted red and green dots. The paint is in orange, yellow, pink, blue and red with gold accents, under a dark aged wash. It suits a home altar, shelf, mantel or niche.
Background
Ganesha is one of the most widely worshipped Hindu deities and is often placed near entrances and home shrines. This figure is hollow cast and hand painted, and it is light for its size. It is unsigned, with no maker's mark; the flat underside has the number 339 handwritten in marker, a small hole, and a round mark from an old label. The exact age has not been established.
Condition
Fair to good condition with visible damage. There is a break of about 1.5 inches in the outer rim of the base that shows the hollow inside, a small hole with a short crack on the side of the belly, and a small hole in one of the base rosettes. The paint has scattered flaking, rubbing and edge wear, and there is dust in the crevices. It sits flat and stable, and the front display is not affected by the base break. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The figure is 12 x 9 x 6.7 inches (H x W x D), about 30.5 x 22.9 x 17 cm, and weighs 3 lb 7 oz.
