Overview
A pair of vintage sterling silver weighted candlesticks by Duchin Creation. Each has a pierced gallery around the candle cup, with a band of open vertical slots and a fine beaded edge below. The cup sits on a tapering stem above a wide, domed base with incised rings, a beaded border and a raised gadroon (twisted rope) rim. The silver has a soft, lived-in shine with darker tone in the recesses, which brings out the pierced and gadrooned detail. They are low and stable, and suit a dining table, mantel, sideboard or bar cart.
Background
Weighted sterling candlesticks were widely made in the United States in the mid-20th century; the thin sterling shell is filled with a heavy compound in the base to keep them steady. Duchin Creation was a well-known American maker of weighted sterling holloware. Each candlestick is marked underneath "STERLING", "Duchin Creation" with the maker's bird logo, and "WEIGHTED". The pale weighting compound shows inside the cups around the candle sockets.
Condition
Good vintage condition. There is light tarnish, especially in the pierced galleries and the gadroon borders, and light surface scratches from use. No dents, breaks or repairs seen. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
Each candlestick is about 3.5 inches high, with a base about 3.5 inches across (H x W x D: 3.5 x 3.5 x 3.5 inches). The pair weighs about 12.1 oz in total, including the weighted bases.
