Overview
A carved bovine bone figure of a Chinese lady standing in long, flowing robes. She raises a small flower spray beside her face with one hand, and with the other she holds a long flowering stem tied with a ribbon at her waist. Her hair is swept up into a bun, painted black with small red accents, and her face has fine black-painted eyes and brows and red lips. The robes are carved in relief and decorated with black incised borders, red highlights and small star-shaped flowers, and the back is carved with draped robes and a sash. The bone has a warm cream tone. This slender figure suits a curio cabinet, bookshelf or desk, or a display with other Asian carvings.
Background
Figures of ladies, immortals and scholars carved from bovine bone and tinted with black and red pigment have long been made in China for the decorative market. This figure is carved from a single section of bone, which gives it its tall, narrow shape, and it stands upright on its own. It is unsigned and unmarked, and the date it was made is not known.
Condition
Pre-owned condition with surface wear, light scratches, discoloration and some wear to the pigments. The top of the head is the natural rough end of the bone, painted black, with a small opening at the back; this area is uneven and may include old chips or losses. The base is stained red with the darker inner bone showing, and it is slightly uneven. Please see all photos.
