Overview
A large Chinese black lacquer storage chest with a hinged lid, painted with birds, flowering branches and peonies. The lid shows a garden scene of small birds on a blossoming branch above a cluster of pink, cream and yellow peonies, framed by a scalloped white border. Bands of blue lattice pattern run along both ends of the chest. The front carries more painted flowers on either side of a round brass lock plate. The interior is a single, open, black-finished compartment, useful for blankets, linens or other storage.
Background
Birds and flowers are a long-standing subject in Chinese decorative painting, tied to spring and the seasons. The lid carries four Chinese characters, 春色宜人 (chūn sè yí rén), which mean "the beauty of spring is pleasing" and match the springtime scene. The phrase is decorative, not a maker's signature. There is no maker's mark or date on the chest. The flowers and leaves have a raised, textured finish.
Condition
Good pre-owned condition. The lid and painted scene are bright and clear, with light surface scratches and handling marks. There is some edge rubbing and a few small finish marks on the sides, and wear on the underside. The round brass lock plate is engraved with flowers and shows tarnish and light scratches. The hasp is intact, but there is no lock or key. The hinges and lid support are present, and the lid opens and closes. Please see all photos.

About 35.8 inches long, 27 inches deep and 10 inches high (90.9 x 68.6 x 25.4 cm) with the lid closed. It weighs about 34 lb (15.4 kg).
