Overview
A Victorian silverplate teapot by the Barbour Silver Co. of Hartford, Connecticut. The pear-shaped body stands on four cast scroll feet and is decorated on both sides with raised and engraved scrolls, leaves and flowers around a plain center panel, left blank for a monogram. The curved spout rises from a cast leaf base and ends in a leaf-shaped tip. The hinged lid is topped with a cast foliate finial, and the handle has twisted reeding, a leaf-cast upper joint and two cream-colored spacer rings. The surface has a soft silver tone with tarnish in the recesses. It suits a sideboard, buffet, tea cart or china cabinet.
Background
The Barbour Silver Co. was founded in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1892 and became part of the International Silver Co. in 1898, which kept using the Barbour mark. This teapot is stamped on the underside with the round "BARBOUR SILVER CO. / QUADRUPLE" mark, pattern number 1006 and size number 7. Quadruple was a heavier grade of silverplate offered by American makers of the period. It dates to circa 1892-1920.
Condition
Good antique condition. The lid hinge works and the cover closes properly, with no dents, leaks or loose parts seen. The plating shows light wear and tarnish, with fine scratches on the body, lid and base, and some darkening inside. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The teapot measures 7.0 x 9.5 x 5.5 inches (H x W x D), with the width measured from handle to spout. It weighs 2 lb 0.9 oz.
