Overview
A pair of antique Victorian figural girandole candlesticks on white marble bases. Each one shows a pastoral scene in cast relief: a standing girl in a long coat and cap feeds a small goat or lamb, while a younger child sits beside a leafy tree. Above the scene, a slim stem with scrolled details rises to a candle cup with a beaded rim. Around each cup is a pierced ring of grapevines and grape clusters, with small holes where crystal prisms once hung. The gilt finish has a warm golden tone with darker recesses. They make a strong pair for a fireplace mantel, sideboard or console table.
Background
Girandole candlesticks like these, made to hang glass prisms that caught the candlelight, were popular mantel decorations in the mid-19th century. Figural scenes with children, animals and trees were common designs. This pair is unmarked. The figural fronts are cast in relief with open backs and are mounted on rectangular white marble bases.
Condition
Fair to good antique condition. Both candlesticks are stable on their bases, with no loose parts. The prisms are missing. One grapevine prism ring is bent out of shape. The gilt is worn on the high points, with dark tarnish in the recesses, and there is green corrosion inside both candle cups and on one ring. The marble bases are yellowed and stained, with small chips at the corners and edges. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
Each candlestick measures about 14 x 5 x 3 inches (H x W x D). The pair weighs about 5 lb 6.8 oz.
