Overview
An antique Victorian three-light figural girandole candelabra on a white marble base. At the bottom, cast in relief, an older man in a tricorn hat and long coat stands beside a little girl in a pointed cap under a leafy tree. He holds a long staff, has a small box at his side, and appears to have a wooden peg leg. The tree trunk rises into a pierced center column of scrolls, with two curving scrolled arms on either side. Each of the three candle cups has a leaf-cast rim and sits inside a pierced ring of leaves and grape clusters, with small holes where crystal prisms once hung. It makes a striking centerpiece for a mantel, sideboard or dining table, and would pair well with matching single candlesticks.
Background
Girandole candelabras and candlesticks, made to hang glass prisms that caught the candlelight, were popular mantel decorations in the mid-19th century, often sold as sets of a three-light center piece and two single candlesticks. Figural scenes from everyday and historical life were common designs. This piece is unmarked. The figural group is cast with an open back and mounted on a rectangular white marble base.
Condition
Good antique condition. One arm is slightly loose, which is common with age; the rest is solid. The prisms are missing. There is green verdigris on the figures and tree trunk and inside the candle cups, and some of the leaf edges on the prism rings are bent. The gilt is worn in places. The marble base has small chips and light stains. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The candelabra measures 16.5 x 15 x 4 inches (H x W x D), with a marble base about 6 x 4 inches. It weighs about 4 lb 14.9 oz.
