Overview

An antique Alvin sterling silver demitasse spoon with a pierced, interlaced handle. At the top of the handle, two looping openwork bands cross in a figure-eight around a smooth oval center, finished with a small cast flower at the tip. Below the openwork is a small scroll and floral motif. The slender stem leads to an oval bowl engraved in script with the date "Nov 12 1918". It suits a coffee or demitasse set, a collection of small silver spoons, or a gift for someone with a November 12 birthday or anniversary.

Background

Alvin was an American silver company, founded in 1886 and later bought by Gorham, known for sterling flatware and small decorative spoons in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The back of the stem carries the Alvin maker's mark, a capital "A" in a shield with a small round mark on each side, along with "STERLING" and "PATENT". The engraved date shows the spoon was in use by November 1918.

Condition

Good antique condition. There are fine scratches and light tarnish, mostly on the back of the bowl and the stem. The openwork handle is intact, with no bends, breaks or repairs visible, and the engraving is clear. Please see all photos.

Dimensions & Weight

The spoon is about 4.2 inches long and 0.8 inches wide at the bowl. It weighs about 0.2 oz (6 g).
