Overview
An antique silverplate syrup pitcher by Reed & Barton with a hinged domed lid. The tapered body has a stamped band of interlaced scroll and bar ornament around the upper collar, and it rests on a ringed, stepped foot. The lid rises to a fluted melon finial and has a curved thumb lift, and the cast handle is decorated with small flowers and wrapped bands. Under the lid, a raised round spout with an angled rim stands inside the recessed top. The surface has a dark, even tarnish that has not been polished. It suits a sideboard, breakfast table, kitchen shelf or a collection of Victorian silverplate.
Background
Lidded syrup and molasses pitchers were a common part of the American table in the late 19th century. The base is stamped "MF'D & PLATED BY REED & BARTON" with the model number 3241, and an old handwritten paper label on the base reads "Reed & Barton silver plated." Reed & Barton was based in Taunton, Massachusetts. This pitcher dates to circa 1870-1900.
Condition
Good antique condition. The plating shows heavy, even tarnish and wear, with light scratches and surface lines on the body and base from use. The lid is hinged and the inner spout is in place, with no significant damage. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The pitcher measures 6 x 4.5 x 2.8 inches (H x W x D), with the width taken across the handle and the depth across the base. It weighs 15.2 oz.
