Antique Chinese Export Black Gilt Lacquer Work Box Drawer Figures Qing 19th C

Overview

An antique Chinese export black and gold lacquer work box with a hinged lid and a shallow lower drawer. The lid shows a gilt garden scene with three figures beside low fences, a pine tree and flowering plants, with scattered flower sprays toward the corners inside a thin gilt border. The front has two seated figures among flowers and grasses on either side of the keyhole, and the ends have gilt flower sprays. The lid opens to a large, plain dark-lined compartment, and a shallow drawer with its own keyhole slides out from one end at the bottom. It suits a shelf, chest, desk or coffee table, and gives useful storage for papers, sewing supplies or keepsakes.

Background

Chinese export lacquer boxes like this were made for Western buyers during the 19th century, often as sewing or writing boxes with fitted trays, which are no longer present here. This example is unmarked and probably mid-19th century. It is of wood construction with small brass hinges, a front keyhole, a keyhole on the drawer and a metal bail handle on one end.

Condition

Poor to fair antique condition, sold as found and not restored. The lacquer is widely cracked and crazed, especially on the lid, with chips and small losses exposing the wood on the edges, corners and lower front, and rubbing to the gilt decoration. Inside, the lid has a crack and lacquer losses around the rim; the compartment is empty with no trays, and two small wire remnants remain on the floor. The underside has an obvious split across its full width, which is stable. The handle on one end is missing, no key is included and the locks have not been tested. Please see all photos.
